Pidurangala at sunrise
A pre-dawn start from the Royal Cave Temple at the foot of the rock. Forest path and stone steps lead to a short boulder scramble in the last 200 m, then the flat summit slab with a 360-degree view and Sigiriya to the west as the sun comes up. A small donation is requested at the temple.
The Sigiriya climb
After breakfast, the climb up Sigiriya: the water gardens and boulder gardens, the painted maidens, the Mirror Wall and the Lion’s Paws, up to Kashyapa’s palace on the summit. Tickets are sold under the Central Cultural Fund.
Dambulla Cave Temple
Add the short climb to the five painted caves of Dambulla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 153 Buddha statues.

Quand y aller
Year-round. Go early: the rock slabs are exposed and hot by late morning, and sunrise is the reason to be there. On Sigiriya, keep quiet near the hornet nests and follow the staff.
