Sigiriya is the rock fortress of fifth-century King Kashyapa, rising about 180 m out of the plains to a summit 349 m above sea level. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, it is the most visited ancient site in Sri Lanka, and the climb to the palace ruins on top is the reason most people come.

Lo que va a aprender

The path runs from the western gate through the symmetrical water gardens, whose ancient hydraulics still partly work, and on through the boulder gardens. It climbs past the sheltered pocket of painted celestial maidens and along the Mirror Wall, its plaster once polished, carrying graffiti from the eighth to the tenth centuries. On the Lion's Terrace the final staircase rises between the giant stone paws of the lion that gave the rock its name, up to the palace ruins on the summit.

The upper stairways are steep and exposed, and wild hornets nest on the rock face: keep quiet near the nests and follow staff instructions.

Access & permits

A ticket is required, sold by the Central Cultural Fund. Its published price for a foreign adult is USD 35, with a USD 20 half ticket, charged in rupees at the day's rate (ccf.gov.lk, checked 27 September 2026). Tickets are single entry, for the day of purchase, and not refundable.
