Backcountry Safety Tool

Self-rescue capacity check for multi-day, remote, or off-trail trips in Sri Lanka. Goes beyond the day-hike safety check — group experience, communications, and water-source confidence all come into play here.

Trip parameters
Why this is different from the day-hike check

The Trail Safety Calculator handles day trips. Once you're overnight or off-trail in Sri Lanka, the calculus changes — you can't walk out before dark, cell signal drops, and you're carrying every gram you might need to handle a problem.

  • Self-rescue window — distance from road × signal × group ability
  • Water confidence — known sources matter more in dry season
  • Comms plan — left an itinerary? Carrying a PLB?
  • Skill stack — first-aid training, navigation, shelter

A "not ready" result usually means you're missing one specific link — comms, water, or trained first-aid — not that you shouldn't go.
