Pekoe Trail Trek
A 14-day expedition across Sri Lanka’s hill country - Hanthana to Pedro Estate by way of Ella, Horton Plains, and the Loolkandura tea estates. Long days on the trail, comfortable lodges at night, and the cultural moments - temple visits, plantation tours, local food - that make the Pekoe Trail more than a hike.
What’s Included on the Full Trek
Pricing is all-inclusive once you’re on the ground. Flights to and from Sri Lanka are not included; we’ll help coordinate timing.
Expert Guides
Sri Lankan trail leaders with route, terrain, and cultural knowledge. Most have guided the Pekoe end-to-end multiple times.
All Permits
National park and trail-access permits handled in advance - no admin on your end, no day-of paperwork delays.
Comfortable Lodges
Hot showers, clean beds, real walls. Lodges are vetted personally and re-booked across seasons.
Full-Board Meals
Three meals daily, prepared trailside or at lodges. Sri Lankan rice-and-curry, plus accommodations for dietary needs.
Ground Transport
Airport pickup, inter-stage transfers, and trek-end return all included. Private van for groups of four or more.
Cultural Experiences
Temple visits, tea plantation tours, traditional dance evenings, and village stops woven into the daily flow.
24/7 Support
Emergency comms throughout the trek. PLB-equipped on remote stages, satellite check-ins where cellular is thin.
Trip Keepsake
Hike Lanka trip shirt at the end. Small thing - but the photos at the airport are better for it.
Planning a hiking tour in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a small island with two monsoons running against each other, which is the single most useful thing to know when you are picking dates. There is almost always somewhere on the island walking well. The question is not whether you can trek in a given month, it is which part of the country you should be in.
Broadly, the southwest monsoon runs May to September and the northeast monsoon runs December to February. The hill country and the south and west coasts walk best from roughly December to March. The east walks best from roughly May to September. The Knuckles Range sits between the two systems and has its driest spells around January to March and again July to September.
These are patterns rather than guarantees. Hill country weather changes on an afternoon, and a wet morning above 1,500 m is a different proposition from a wet morning at the coast. We plan around the forecast as your dates get close, and we will tell you if we think you have picked the wrong region for the month rather than take the booking and hope.
Pekoe Trail, Ella, Horton Plains December to March Section treks and the full 22-stage traverse. Cool nights, long clear mornings.
Meemure and the traverse January to March, July to September Cloud forest, river crossings, remote village stays. Leeches after rain.
Hanthana, Udawattakele Most of the year Day hikes and warm-up walks. The easiest region to add to a short trip.
Arugam Bay and inland May to September Coastal walking and wildlife when the hill country is under the southwest monsoon.
Which trek suits you
Most people arrive wanting either a taste of the trail or the whole thing, and those are very different holidays. Three rough tiers:
A day, or a few days
Day hikes from Kandy, or a short section of the Pekoe Trail. You sleep in one place, walk with a light pack, and you do not need to train for it. The right choice if hiking is one part of a broader trip rather than the reason for it.
A section trek
Three to six days on a defined stretch, such as Haputale to Ella, or the Knuckles traverse to Meemure. You move between lodges, carry a day pack, and you will feel it in your legs by the third morning. Reasonable general fitness is enough.
An end-to-end expedition
The full 22-stage Pekoe Trail, or a longer custom traverse. Two weeks of consecutive walking days with real ascent. This one rewards preparation, and it is the trip we are most likely to ask you honest questions about before confirming.
If you are unsure which tier you are in, the hike fitness calculator is a more useful guide than any description, and the hike difficulty scale explains what we mean by moderate or hard on Sri Lankan terrain specifically, which is not what it means in the Alps. For a sense of the routes themselves, the Pekoe Trail stage guides cover all 22 stages, and top hikes in Sri Lanka is the wider list.
What to sort out before you come
Permits and access. National park and trail-access permits are handled in advance on guided trips, so there is no paperwork on your end. Some routes cross private tea estate land, which is one reason the Pekoe Trail is better walked with someone who knows which paths are open.
Guides. Every trip is led by an SLTDA-licensed Sri Lankan guide. That licensing matters for insurance and for park access, and it is worth asking any operator about, not just us.
Fitness and preparation. The trails are rarely technical, but the days are long and humid, and the ascent adds up. Our trail conditioning guide covers the weeks beforehand, and trip requirements sets out what we need from you.
Gear. You need less than you think, but the wrong footwear will end a trek. See the packing list and the essential gear guide. Leeches are a fact of the wet-season hill country rather than an emergency.
Insurance. Not included, and worth reading properly, because many standard travel policies exclude trekking above a certain altitude. Our travel insurance guide explains what to look for.
Flights. Not included in trip pricing. We will help coordinate timing once dates are set.
