Watagoda to Kotagala
14.90 km · Moderate · 4 hours 30 minutes · Nuwara Eliya district · Dimbula tea-planting district
Stage 6 is the classic tea-trail experience - Watagoda to Kotagala across the heart of the Dimbula tea-planting district, with the Holyrood and St. Clair factories at the mid-point and the “Little Niagara of Sri Lanka” waterfall visible from the trail. It is rated Moderate, and the views of Kotmale Reservoir are constant.
What you’ll walk through
Mostly flat terrain through manicured tea estates. The trail crosses the railway line several times between Thalawakele and Kotagala, weaving through valleys and connecting small Tamil hamlets. The gentle ascents and gradual descents make this a recovery day after the harder stages 3 and 4.
Landmarks on this stage
- Thalawakele town - The centre of the Dimbula tea-planting district.
- Holyrood Tea Factory - A working colonial-era factory.
- St. Clair Tea Factory - Sister factory at the same Dimbula address.
- St. Clair's Falls - The "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka," visible from the trail.
- Kotmale Reservoir - Long views across the water from the ridge sections.
- Kotmale Valley - Wide valley vistas through most of the middle stage.
When to walk
One of the easier stages to walk year-round. Dry Season (January-March) gives the clearest views of the falls and reservoir. The Dimbula side is less monsoon-affected than the western stages.
