Horton Plains to Udaweriya
14.30 km · Moderate · 4 hours · Nuwara Eliya district · Badulla flank
Stage 11 leaves the high plateau via the Devil’s Staircase viewpoint - one of the most dramatic vistas on the trail - and descends 650 m through Uduwara Falls to the Udaweriya tea district. The grade is Moderate; the panoramas are not.
What you’ll walk through
The trail traces the southern lip of Horton Plains, with steep drops off the escarpment to the east. The Devil’s Staircase section is named for a notorious switchback road below it. The descent passes Uduwara Falls and threads through villages and tea plantations to Udaweriya Estate.
Landmarks on this stage
- Ohiya Tamil School - Village school the trail passes early.
- Devil's Staircase View Point - One of the trail's signature viewpoints - visible cliff drops to the east.
- Green Agro Farm - Mid-stage organic farm.
- Uduwara Falls - A multi-tier waterfall visible from the descent.
- Udaweriya Tea Factory - Stage-end factory.
- Udaweriya Estate - Working tea estate at the finish.
When to walk
The viewpoint is most rewarding in Dry Season - cloud-locked in monsoon. The descent is steep; avoid in heavy rain.
