Hakgala Rock towers over the botanical garden of the same name, about 6 km south-east of Nuwara Eliya. It is often listed as a hike, but it is not one. The rock and its cloud forest form the Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve, the strictest category of protection in Sri Lanka.

Why you cannot hike it

The reserve was declared in 1938 and covers 1,142 hectares, from about 1,650 m up to the 2,178 m summit. Entry is prohibited except for official duties or authorised scientific research, with the permission of the Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation. The best way to see the rock is from Hakgala Botanical Garden below it, or from the Nuwara Eliya-Welimada road.

Entering the reserve without permission is prohibited.

Access & permits

Strict Nature Reserve (IUCN category Ia). No public entry. The botanical garden below is a separate, ticketed site.
