Why the Knuckles

The Knuckles Conservation Forest is part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage Site. Its ridges catch rain from both monsoons, which is why the forest is so varied: montane cloud forest on the tops, grassland and rock on the exposed shoulders, and paddy and village gardens in the valleys. Gombaniya, the highest peak, is 1,906 metres.

Few international walkers go further than a day trip from Kandy. Walking through to Meemure, one of the most remote villages in the Central Province, is the reason to give it three days.

A sample plan

Your guide sets the final route once trail and road conditions are checked, so the days below can shift. The road into Meemure is the one to watch. It can be cut by landslips after heavy rain, and we confirm it is open before every departure rather than assuming it.

Day 1: Kandy to Deanston, Dothalugala and Mini World’s End

Pickup in Kandy and a drive into the range. At the Knuckles Conservation Centre in Deanston your forest permit is issued, then you walk the Dothalugala trail, about 5.8 km through montane forest (three to four hours with stops). Late afternoon, the short 1.5 km walk to Mini World’s End, a cliff edge at about 1,190 metres. Night nearby.

Day 2: Corbet’s Gap to Nitre Cave, then down to Meemure

From Corbet’s Gap the trail runs about 11 km to Nitre Cave, roughly five hours of walking over open ridges and through forest. From there you drop into the valley to Meemure, where you stay with a village family. Homestays here are simple: a clean room, shared facilities and home-cooked rice and curry.

Day 3: Meemure, and Lakegala if you want the climb

A morning in the village and along the Heen Ganga. Strong walkers can climb Lakegala, the steep rock peak above Meemure, which is only attempted in dry weather and always with the guide. Afternoon drive back to Kandy.

What’s arranged for you

  • An SLTDA-licensed Sri Lankan guide for all three days.
  • Knuckles forest permits, issued at the Conservation Centre.
  • Transport from Kandy to the trailhead and back from Meemure.
  • Two nights’ accommodation, including the Meemure homestay, and meals on the trail.
  • Leech socks. Leeches are part of walking in the Knuckles.

Not included: flights, travel insurance (required), tips for your guide, and personal walking gear. See the packing list.

When to go

The western ridges are at their clearest in the Dry Season, January to March. The eastern valleys around Meemure catch the north-east monsoon, which brings their heaviest rain from December to February, and the south-west Monsoon soaks the western slopes from around May. Rivers rise quickly after heavy rain, so every departure is confirmed against current conditions before you set off.

Is it for you?

You’ll want to be comfortable walking five hours on uneven, sometimes slippery ground, with some steep descents. No climbing experience is needed unless you choose Lakegala. If you’re unsure, the fitness calculator and our difficulty scale are a good place to start.
