Hanthana to Galaha

The opening stage of the Pekoe Trail leaves the Ceylon Tea Museum at Hanthana, climbs through the tea estates above Kandy, and finishes 13 km later at the Galaha Post Office. It is the gentlest day on the trail by design - the trail authority rates it Easy in both directions - and it sets the rhythm for the twenty-one stages that follow.
What you’ll walk through
The path begins on concrete estate road and transitions to gravel as it climbs through the Hanthana Tea Estate. Forest patches alternate with open tea fields up to the day’s high point at roughly 1,067 m, then the trail descends through Lunuwella Viharaya and the Galaha Group Hindu Kovil before reaching the village post office. The Knuckles Range fills the eastern horizon for most of the morning.

- Ceylon Tea Museum - The start point and a working museum on the south flank of the Hanthana range - worth an hour before you set off.
- Upper Hanthana Church - A small chapel on the ridge with views back toward Kandy.
- Sandagiri Maha Stupa - A whitewashed stupa overlooking Hanthana Tea Estate.
- Victoria Reservoir - Visible from the higher ridgelines on a clear morning.
- Galaha Group Hindu Kovil - Marks the descent into Galaha village.
When to walk
Good year-round - Hanthana sits in the western flank of the central highlands and is exposed to the southwest monsoon (May-July), so the trail surface can be muddy then. The Dry Season (January-March) and the second window (September-October) are the easiest walking.
