Meemure is one of the most isolated villages in Sri Lanka - population about 420, no mobile signal, mail collected daily from a junction outside the village. It sits in the Knuckles range on the border between Kandy and Matale districts. The way in is either a 14 km trail from Loolwatte or roughly seven hours by 4×4 from Colombo. Most visitors come for a single day; the village experience itself is the destination, not the trail to get there.

What you’ll walk through

The trail in starts at Loolwatte on the A26 highway and follows old village tracks through cardamom and pepper plantations for 14 km. The route crosses streams several times and climbs gradually into the Knuckles foothills. Lakegala mountain dominates the western view for the last hour. The trail is moderate but the heat and humidity in the lower sections make it harder than the elevation suggests. We typically run this as a 4×4 in + walk around the village + 4×4 out day trip; the full hike-in option is for groups with overnight time.

No mobile signal in the village. CDMA telephone service only. Cash only.

Key landmarks & features

  • Loolwatte trailhead - The starting point on the A26 - also the 4×4 access road.
  • Cardamom + pepper plots - The village's main cash crops; you walk through these for most of the trail.
  • Heen Ganga river - The river system you cross multiple times.
  • Lakegala mountain - The dramatic peak dominating the village skyline.
  • Meemure village centre - Population ~420, no mobile signal, postal delivery via Thapal Junction. Genuinely remote.

When to walk

Dry Season (January-March) for the walking. The village is accessible year-round by 4×4 but the trail becomes muddy and the stream crossings rise in monsoon.
