Bogawantalawa to Dayagama
17.13 km · Hard · 5 hours · Nuwara Eliya district
Stage 9 is the first Hard-graded stage on the trail. It transitions from tea plantations to grasslands and then to forested valleys before crossing a dramatic rocky pass - the route gets remote here, with no roads for most of the morning.
What you’ll walk through
The trail leaves Bogawana Tea Factory and climbs through Bopaththalawa Camp Site to high grasslands above 1,600 m. The rocky pass at Haritha Kanda is steep and exposed; in wet weather the rocks get slick. The descent into Dayagama is on Sandringham Estate roads.
Landmarks on this stage
- Bogawana Tea Factory - The trailhead factory.
- Jacob's Ladder - A steep stone-step section on the climb out.
- Bopaththalawa Camp Site - A trail-authority camp near the high grasslands.
- Bopaththalawa Farm - Working dairy farm in the grasslands.
- Manik Palama Farm - Vegetable farm at mid-stage.
- Haritha Kanda - The rocky pass - the technical crux of the stage.
- Sandringam Tea Estate - The estate the trail descends through to Dayagama.
When to walk
Dry Season only - the rocky pass is dangerous in rain, and the high grasslands get cloud-locked in monsoon. Mid-January to mid-March is the safest window.
