Great Western Mountain: A Hill-Country Hike From the Railway
Challenging · Nuwara Eliya District · Central Province

Great Western Mountain rises to 2,216 m above the tea estate that shares its name, between Nanu Oya and Radella. The walk starts about 1 km from Great Western railway station on the main line, which makes it one of the few big hill-country summits you can reach by train.
What you’ll walk through
The station stands at about 1,455 m and serves the 628-hectare Great Western tea estate on the lower slopes. The path climbs out of the estate and becomes steep, unpaved and in places unclear, and it is slippery after rain. On a clear day the viewpoints near the top look across to Sri Pada, Kirigalpotta, Thotupola Kanda and Horton Plains.
Parts of the path are unclear. Walk with a guide or a downloaded GPS track.
Access & permits
We found no permit requirement or fee. The trail begins on working tea-estate land: stay on the path and be courteous to estate workers.
