Lipton's Seat is the ridge above Haputale where Sir Thomas Lipton, who bought the Dambatenne estate, is said to have sat to survey his tea. On a clear morning the land drops away to the south and the view covers five provinces. It is one of the great sunrise walks of the hill country.

What you’ll walk through

From the Dambatenne Tea Factory, which is still working, a narrow estate road zigzags about 7 km up through the tea terraces, past pickers at work and the estate workers' line houses, to the viewpoint and Lipton's statue on the ridge. Many visitors take a tuk-tuk up for sunrise and walk back down, which takes two to three hours. From the ridge a path runs about 3 km across the plateau to St Catherine's village, where Pekoe Trail stage 13 ends and stage 14 begins.

The estate road is narrow and shared with tuk-tuks and estate vehicles. Ask before photographing the pickers; photography is not allowed inside the factory.

Access & permits

A small entrance fee is charged near the viewpoint; the Pekoe Trail's own guide quotes 100 LKR, without a date, and published foreigner prices vary, so carry cash. If you arrive on the Pekoe Trail, stages 13 and 14 need a Pekoe Trail pass.

When to go

Arrive at or soon after sunrise: mist rolls in during the morning and can hide the view completely. It is cold on the ridge at dawn, so bring a layer.
