Ella Rock: A Hiker’s Guide

Ella Rock is the wider, taller cousin of Little Adam’s Peak - a 10 km round trip from Ella railway station with the kind of summit panorama that defines the hill country. The trail mixes railway-track sections, tea-estate paths, and steep forest climbs. It’s rated Moderate, not because any section is technical, but because the cumulative climbing and the easy-to-miss waymarks add up.
What you’ll walk through
Start at Ella railway station and follow the track south toward Kithal Ella. After roughly 1.5 km you leave the tracks at a small bridge and turn into Kithalella village, then climb through small tea-holders’ plots on dirt road. The middle of the trail is the easiest to lose - multiple plantation tracks fan out and the official route isn’t obvious. The final climb is on forest path with eucalyptus and pine groves, ending at the summit ridge above Ella Gap.
The waymarks fade in places. A local guide or a downloaded GPX track is recommended for first-timers.

- Ella Rock summit - Roughly 1,041 m elevation; the panorama down the Ella Gap is the trail's payoff.
When to walk
Dry Season (January-March) is the clearest window. The trail can be done year-round but is leechy in the wet middle stages (May-November) and the summit clouds in monsoon. Start by 06:30 to be down before midday heat on the railway sections.
