Little Adam’s Peak: A Gentle Climb

Little Adam’s Peak is the easiest serious summit in the hill country - 1,141 m, a 4 km round trip, finished in two to three hours. The grade is gentle, the trail surface is mostly graded earth and stone steps, and the panorama at the top is good enough to draw visitors who haven’t hiked in years. It’s our default recommendation for first-time hikers in Sri Lanka.
What you’ll walk through
The signposted trailhead is on Passara Road, a short tuk-tuk ride from Ella town. The trail climbs gently through tea estates for the first 1.5 km, with consistent gradient. The final 500 m to the summit ridge involves stone steps - substantial, but well-maintained. Multiple summit points run along the ridge, each with a slightly different angle on Ella Rock, Adam’s Peak (on a clear morning), and the Uva valley below. Sunrise and sunset are both rewarding.

When to walk
Year-round. Most rewarding in Dry Season for clear distant views. Sunrise (start 05:30) or late-afternoon (start 16:00) are quietest; midday is hot and crowded.
