Arugam Bay to Elephant Rock

This is the easy day on the east coast - a 5 km coastal walk from Arugam Bay south to Elephant Rock (sometimes “Elephant Point”). Arugam Bay is the only international surf-competition venue in Sri Lanka and one of the country’s top ten surf destinations; the walk is what you do on the rest day. Flat, beach + scrub terrain, occasional wildlife sightings - local elephants traverse this corridor between Lahugala and Kumana National Parks.
What you’ll walk through
Start from Arugam Bay’s south beach and walk along the shore. The track moves between sand and scrub as you head south. Pass small lagoons and rocky outcrops. Elephant Rock itself is a granite outcrop at the headland with surfable breaks on its south side and a low summit (~40 m) you can scramble up for full coastal panorama. Time the walk for early morning or late afternoon - the sun is brutal between 10:00 and 16:00 on this exposed coast.

When to walk
East coast season is May-September (the rest of the country is in monsoon then). The Dry Season for the Pekoe Trail (January-March) is the rough season here. Plan accordingly - don’t try the coast in November-January.
