Bambarakanda Falls: The Tallest Waterfall

Bambarakanda is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka - 263 m (863 ft) of single-drop horsetail formation, fed by the Kuda Oya (a Walawe River tributary). The waterfall is at roughly 1,100 m elevation in a pine forest just off the A4 highway near Kalupahana. The standard visit is a 5 km approach from Kalupahana village to the base; longer routes climb the surrounding ridges for upper viewpoints.
What you’ll walk through
The road from Kalupahana to the base of the falls is driveable for the first 3 km, then walking only. The path is dirt road and forest track, mostly flat with a gentle final descent to the viewing platform at the base. The water volume varies seasonally - peak flow is during and just after the southwest monsoon (June-September). For dramatic photos, sunrise gives the cleanest backlight.

When to walk
Peak flow is during and just after the southwest monsoon (June-September). In Dry Season the falls are a thinner ribbon but the surrounding forest is easier walking. Avoid the falls themselves in heavy rain - the spray zone is treacherous.
