Pidurangala Rock
2.5 km round trip · Moderate · 1.5-2.5 hours · Matale District · Central Province
Pidurangala sits one kilometre north of Sigiriya - the same granite-plug geology, the same 5th-century connection to King Kashyapa, but without the $35 foreigner entrance fee and most of the tour bus crowds. The hike to the summit is short and includes a boulder scramble at the top. The reason most hikers come here is not the climb itself: it’s the view back across to Sigiriya Rock that you cannot get from Sigiriya.
What you’ll walk through
The trail starts at the Royal Cave Temple at the base of the rock. A small donation is requested at the temple. The first stretch is forest path through scrub, then stone steps. The final 200 m is a boulder scramble - short, but a real scramble with both hands needed. The summit is a flat granite slab with full 360° view; Sigiriya rock fortress sits west across the plain, visible in its full silhouette.

When to walk
Year-round. Sunrise (start 05:30) and sunset (start 16:30) are the most popular and the most rewarding. Avoid midday - the summit slab is exposed and gets blistering by 11 AM.
