Sinharaja Rainforest
Varies - short loops 2.4-4.4 km; long routes up to 14 km · Easy to Moderate · 2-7 hours · Sabaragamuwa + Southern Provinces
Sinharaja is the densest rainforest in Asia and Sri Lanka’s primary lowland rainforest reserve. 88.64 km² of forest with origins in the Jurassic period (200-145 million years ago). UNESCO World Heritage status since 1988. 95% of Sri Lanka’s endemic birds occur here - 20 of the country’s 26 endemic species - and over 60% of the trees are endemic.
What you’ll walk through
There is no single Sinharaja hike. The reserve has four main entry points, each with its own trail network: Kudawa (northwest, the most popular), Pitadeniya (southeast, Rakwana side), Neluwa (southwest), and Deniyaya-Mederipitiya (southeast). All visitors must be accompanied by a licensed guide assigned at the gate - non-negotiable. Trails range from short half-day loops (Kudawa Research Loop, ~3 km) to full-day routes through dense interior forest (Sinharaja East trail, ~14 km).
Licensed guide required at the gate - non-negotiable. Leech socks essential. Bring rain layer regardless of season.
Key landmarks & features
- Kudawa entrance - The most popular access point on the northwest flank - Rathnapura district.
- Sri Lanka blue magpie - Endemic bird species, frequently sighted in the lower-canopy understorey.
- Red-faced malkoha - One of the rarest endemic birds - Sinharaja is your best chance of seeing one.
- Sri Lankan birdwing - The endemic butterfly species - large, dramatic, slow.
- Sinhagala peak - 742 m, the high point of one of the longer interior routes.
- Research Loop (Kudawa) - The standard 3 km introduction loop - manageable in a half day.
When to walk
Year-round but better in the drier windows (Jan-Mar, Aug-Sep). Sinharaja gets rain year-round; the question is how much. Leeches are heavy May-November. Wet feet are inevitable; embrace.
