Horton Plains National Park: World’s End
9.5 km loop · Easy to Moderate · 3-4 hours · Nuwara Eliya District · Central Province
Horton Plains is the high plateau of Sri Lanka - 3,160 ha of montane grassland and subtropical evergreen forest sitting between 2,100 and 2,300 m. The standard loop hike is 9.5 km, takes three to four hours, and threads two of the country’s signature features: World’s End, a sheer 870 m cliff drop, and Baker’s Falls, a 20 m waterfall on the Belihul Oya. The park has been National Park status since 1988 and is part of the UNESCO Central Highlands inscription (2010).
What you’ll walk through
The loop starts at the Park Office at Pattipola, follows a graded trail counter-clockwise through montane grassland (the “wet patna”), and reaches Little World’s End at the 3.5 km mark, then Big World’s End at 4.5 km. The trail then drops through cloud forest to Baker’s Falls and loops back to the start. The trail is well-marked and not technical, but the altitude and the cold make this a real day out - mean annual temperature is 13 °C and morning lows can hit 5 °C even in March.
Permit required at the park gate (foreigner rate higher than local). Bring layers - temperatures range 5-27 °C across the day. Mandatory single-use plastic ban inside the park.
Key landmarks & features
- Park Office (Pattipola) - Permit gate + trailhead. Tickets are sold at the gate; arrive before 09:00 to avoid the cloud cover that locks the view from World's End by midmorning.
- Little World's End - A smaller cliff drop at the 3.5 km mark.
- Big World's End - 870 m sheer drop into the lowlands - the park's signature view.
- Baker's Falls - 20 m waterfall on the Belihul Oya, a tributary of the Walawe River.
- Montane grassland - 2,000 ha of "wet patna" - sub-alpine grassland found nowhere else in the country.
When to walk
Dry Season (January-March) only. World’s End fills with cloud by 10 AM most days even in the dry months - start at first light from the gate. Park is open 06:00-18:00.
Getting there & practicalities
- Two entrances - Pattipola on the north side, the usual approach from Nuwara Eliya, about 28 km away by road; and Ohiya on the south side. Both have nearby railway stations on the hill-country line.
- Opening - The gates open at 6am. Be there at opening: Worl’ End usually clouds over by mid-morning.
- Plastic ban - Bags are checked at the entrance and single-use plastic is taken off you, so pack snacks and water in reusable containers.
- Tickets - Park tickets are sold at the gate by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, with a separate vehicle charge. Bring cash in rupees and your passport. We do not print the price because we could not confirm it from the Department itself.
- Drones - Not allowed inside the national park.
