Riverston is Matale’s answer to Horton Plains - a high grassland with its own cliff drop (locally “Mini World’s End”), but at a quarter of the cost, a tenth of the crowd, and accessible via a single 0.75 km nature trail. Pitawala Pathana, the grassland itself, is roughly 1,000 acres of velvet-thin turf over rock slab at around 1,500 m. The Knuckles range fills the eastern horizon. Most visitors do it as a half-day from Kandy or Matale.

What you’ll walk through

The Pitawala Pathana entrance is on the Rattota-Illukkumbura road, easy to find with a small car park and ticket booth. The 0.75 km loop to Mini World’s End is paved + boardwalk and family-friendly. For a longer day, the Manigala Peak route adds 7 km and tops out at the summit with panoramic Knuckles views. The Sera Ella waterfall is a side-trip from the main road, accessed via a short forest track.
