Gombaniya: The Highest Peak in the Knuckles
Challenging · Knuckles Range · Central Province

At 1,906 m, Gombaniya is the highest summit of the Knuckles range, part of the Central Highlands UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the top, on a clear day, most of the massif spreads out below you.
What you’ll walk through
The usual approach runs from Wattegama through Panwila to Hulu Ganga, and the climb starts near Alakola estate. The path is steep, often overgrown and needs some scrambling. The upper slopes spend much of the day in cloud, so an early start matters for the view.
Steep, overgrown ground with scrambling, and summit cloud that can remove all visibility. Walk with a guide.
Access & permits
The Knuckles range is managed by the Forest Department. We could not confirm from an official source whether a permit is needed for Gombaniya, or any fee. Ask us or the Forest Department before going.
