Lakegala: Climbing the Knuckles' Great Rock Face
about 12 km round trip · Strenuous · 5-7 hours · Kandy and Matale Districts · Central Province

Lakegala is the bare-rock monolith that towers over Meemure, with a near-vertical face dropping almost 910 m. Its name means "Rock of Lanka", and local legend makes it Ravana's lookout. It is the one Knuckles summit that needs real scrambling to reach.
What you’ll walk through
From Meemure the trail crosses forest and a stream for about 5 km to the foot of the rock, then climbs exposed rock to the top. Meemure itself is remote, reached over the hills from Hunnasgiriya or by tuk-tuk from Hemmathagama. The alternative start is Narangamuwa on the Matale side.
The upper section is exposed rock that needs scrambling. Go with a guide, and not in rain. Mobile signal is limited.
Access & permits
Lakegala lies in the Knuckles range, managed by the Forest Department. We could not confirm from an official source whether a permit is needed for this summit. A local guide is strongly recommended.
