Dolukanda: A Hike in the Kurunegala Plains
Moderate · about 3-4 hours · Kurunegala District · North Western Province
Dolukanda rises alone out of the north-western plains, a forested mountain known locally for its caves and its medicinal plants. Folklore holds it fell from the sky, a piece of the Himalaya dropped by Hanuman in the Ramayana.
What you’ll walk through
The hike starts at Rankirimada Viharaya in Doluwa village and climbs roughly 350 m through forest to a long, narrow summit plateau running north to south. From the top the view opens over Kurunegala, Wariyapola and the Deduru Oya plains.
Our sources for Dolukanda are hiking blogs and tour operators rather than official records; quoted heights are around 600 m. Treat the details as a guide.
Access & permits
We found no permit requirement or fee. The paths split often and are unsigned: go with a local guide.
