The Knuckles is the most ecologically dense part of Sri Lanka and the only true wilderness range we run trips into. UNESCO World Heritage status (2010, as part of the Central Highlands inscription) covers most of the upper massif. Gombaniya, the highest peak, tops out at 1,906 m. Locals call the range Dumbara Kanduvetiya - “mist-laden mountain range” - and on most days you understand why before lunch.

What you’ll walk through

There is no single Knuckles hike. We run trips into the range from three main trailheads: Meemure village (the remote-feeling east side), Riverston / Mini World’s End (the accessible Pitawala Pathana grassland on the west), and Corbet’s Gap (the high pass between the two). Most of the trails follow cardamom-planters’ paths and old village tracks. The forest above 1,400 m is consistently cloud-wrapped, which is part of the appeal and part of the navigation challenge.

Permits required for the conservation forest. We handle the paperwork on guided trips.

Key landmarks & features

  • Gombaniya - The highest peak at 1,906 m (6,253 ft).
  • Five Peaks (Knuckles) - The signature ridge that gives the range its English name - 1,864 m.
  • Pitawala Pathana - Roughly 1,000 acres of high grassland, leading to Mini World's End.
  • Mini World's End - A 0.75 km nature trail to a cliff escarpment with views over the Knuckles valleys.
  • Meemure village - A 14 km trail from Loolwatte; one of the most isolated villages in the country.
  • Corbet's Gap - The high mountain pass linking the eastern + western flanks of the range.

When to walk

Dry Season (January-March) is essential - the range is genuinely cloud-locked through monsoon and the cardamom-belt trails get treacherous in rain. We do not run guided trips here in mid-monsoon.
